Mintal is the first Chinese company who adopted world leading green technology in chromite pelletizing and ferrochrome production. Mintal is featured with ultra-large equipment, intelligent and clean production. Production cost and environment impact is largely reduced due to the lower unit energy consumption and far below industry standard emission level.
Since 2011, Mintal has started the construction of 1,000kt ferrochrome project. By now, two projects with a total capacity of 1,400 ktpa chrome pellet sintering and 650ktpa ferrochrome smelting have been put into operation. And a 700ktpa chrome pellet sintering plant and 350ktpa ferrochrome smelting plant project is expected to be finished by the end of 2019 or the beginning of 2020. After the completion of the whole project, Mintal’s annual ferrochrome output will be ranked.
“Man and nature coexisting harmoniously, technologically advanced, recycling economy, green development” as our core idea, Mintal insists on sustainable development and devote to an environment-friendly way of resources consumption. The ultra-large smelting equipment complies with “China advanced manufacturing 2025 strategy” and Industry 4.0 international standard. China’s admittance criterion to metallurgical industry is that the capacity of electric furnace must be bigger than 12500KVA, while the capacity of Mintal furnace is 75000KVA. Also whole production equipment set is intelligentized with DCS, MES, DSS and NC systems. DCS, the process control system, is based on the theory of intelligent control and by means of computer technology and network, to realize automatic production process control and to optimize production system information management. The database of MES (used for production scheduling) is connected to PSC, so that the production management is optimized through online measurement and quality monitoring. DSS, short for Decision Support System, helps to make decisions in a human-computer interaction way. NC is adopted for business administration, which includes ERP (financial and material management) system, HR (human resource management) system, and SCM (supply and customer management) system. With such efficient management systems, Mintal’s labor productivity is 10 times of productivity compared to traditional production method, with the per capita output value exceeding 10 million RMB.
The closed smelting furnace technology employed by Mintal is able to conserve more resources and have less impact to environment. Compared to conventional smelting technology, coke consumption is 10% lower (50kt per year), energy consumption 20% lower (950 million KWH), and water consumption 80% lower (9,500k m3); meanwhile the particulate emission is 90% less (651t), and sulfur emission 94% lower (673t).

Mintal Resources is the first in the world to deeply combine metallurgy with chemical industry. Mintal Resources utilizes industrial off-gas in producing polyester glycol, which promotes overall resource utilization level in ferro-alloy industry, making the company a successful model of metallurgy-chemical joint industry. Mintal Resources makes use of the furnace off-gas generated by Mintal Chrome during ferrochrome smelting, producing 150ktpa polyester glycol, which will help Mintal Chrome to decrease CO2 emission by 250kt per year, to achieve a near-zero carbon emission target.

Glycol is an important organic chemical material, mainly be used in producing polyester fiber, plastic, rubber, polyester paint, polyester, non-ionic surface active agent, ethanol amine and explosives. In the last ten years, self-sufficiency rate of ethylene glycol in China is around 35%, the rest amount mainly depends on imports. In 2016, China’s apparent consumption of glycol is 12.5732 million tons, while our domestic production is 5.02 million tons, which means the self-sufficiency rate is 39.9%, and import volume is 7.5728 million tons. Glycol is categorized as State encouraged product with a broad market prospect. “Development strategy for petrochemical and chemical industries (2016-2020)” that the industrialization and application of using synthetic gas in producing polyester glycol should be accelerated. And in 2017, China’s National Development and Reform Commission listed the secondary of utilization high carbon contained industrial exhaust gas (gas from calcium carbide, coke oven, blast furnace) in producing glycol into “National Catalogue of Key Energy-saving And Low-carbon Technology to Be Promoted (2017, Low-carbon Part)”.
Currently 60% of the glycol production technology used in China is petroleum method, using ethylene and ethylene oxide as raw materials. Such technology is imported from Royal Dutch Shell, Scientific Design Company Inc and Dow Chemical, and the equipment for is mostly possessed by large state-owned enterprises like Sinopec, Petro China and CNOOC, which means China is of high dependence on foreign technology. Mintal joins hands with China’s top chemical design, research and development companies -- China Chemical Xi'an Hualu Engineering Company and Shanghai Pujing Chemical Co. Ltd, adopting domestic leading catalytic synthesis technology with self-owned intellectual property to produce glycol from exhaust gas generated during ferrochrome alloy production.
Above mentioned advanced glycol production technology developed by domestic company independently is of low energy consumption, water consumption and emission. Compared to conventional petroleum method, crude oil consumption of the mentioned technology is 375kt less; compared to coal method, raw coal consumption is 300kt less per year, particle emission 0.49t lower and SO2 460t lower. Considering the fact that China is lack of oil and gas but abundant in coal resources, such technology is of high environmental benefits. Adopting the technique is able to satisfy domestic market demand in glycol, which will be helpful in improving the supply and marketing situation, reducing the dependence of glycol import, acting its exemplary function in alleviating the domestic shortage in glycol.
Mintal Resources utilizes industrial off-gas in producing polyester glycol, which promotes overall resource utilization level, saves fossil energy resources, develops circular economy, and makes the joint development of both economic benefits and environmental benefit.
（2）Introduction of Mintal Group Ferritic Stainless Steel Co., Ltd.
On the basis of “ From finite to infinite “, Mintal Group focuses on using the large advanced equipment, intelligent and clean system in the ferrochrome production. Meanwhile Mintal Group focuses on the application and development of chrome metal. We plan to build a production base of 1.6 million tons of modern rare earth ferritic stainless steel in Jiuyuan industrial park, Baotou city. Now we already got a permission of building a ferritic stainless steel production base of 800,000 tons
Mintal Group Ferritic Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. plans to start 1.6 million tons of modern rare earth ferritic stainless steel project and set up the world’s excellent ferritic stainless steel plant. Taking the resource and cost advantages of ferrochrome production of the parent company (Mintal Group Chrome Industry Science and Technology Co., Ltd.) and the energy price advantage of Inner Mongolia, drawing on the experience of BaoShan Steel and Outokumpu Stainless Steel production, Mintal Group Ferritic Stainless Steel Co., Ltd. uses the perrin process of hot iron and hot ferrochrome to smelting modern rare earth ferritic stainless steel.
Modern ferritic stainless steel is a new type of material with the broad market prospect developed in the world in recent years. It aims to use the advanced technology to making up the scarcity of resources. Ferritic stainless steel has a low life cycle cost and can be fully recycled. The national “Industrial Structure Adjustment Guidance Catalogue” lists the production of ferritic stainless steel as an encouragement project. Also the state encourages the marine and ship manufactory using the ultra-pure ferritic stainless steel in manufacture.
Production of ferritic stainless steel is not involved with consumption of scarce resources such as Nickel and Manganese, which makes it more economical and a better alternative of austenitic stainless steel. Ferritic stainless steel, as a new material for both civil and military use, has been broadly applied in electronics, architectural ornament, vehicle exhaust system, household appliances, container, outdoor water tank, solar water heater, elevator, railcar, subway and coins.
Mintal employs Perrin process using hot iron and hot ferrochrome, instead of melting ferrochrome with electric furnace. As a result, energy consumption is 600KWH/t lower, and metal recovery rate is 3% higher; meanwhile particle emission is reduced to 0, saving energy by 30% and decreasing industrial emission by 40%. Therefore the project is supported by China stainless Steel Association. Chinese Academy of Engineering has set up an academician workstation for stainless steel material in Mintal.
